Expert Speaks Interview with Kulwant Nagi

1. Kulwant, you completed your engineering in 2010 and today you are one of the best bloggers in the world. Can you share your story in brief for the readers who are unaware of your inspirational journey?

Yes, I completed my B.tech in 2010 and I became a blogger in 2011.

It all started when I wanted to go to the USA in 2010 and I cracked GRE and TOEFL exams. One university offered me a $16,000 scholarship and I was excited for my higher study in the USA. Soon I found that my father didn’t have the money to afford my education in the USA and I decided to drop that plan.

I started my first job as a verification engineer in December 2011 and I loved it in the first 2-3 months. Soon I found myself enclosed in the corporate world and decided to quit my job. In June 2011 I resigned from my job and started doing the online research for the next 3 months.

One day I requested a friend of mine to allow me to write a blog post on his blog. He allowed me and that article for more than 200 comments in just 24 hours. That was the aha-moment in my life when I realized that I could write and become a blogger. So I launched my first ever blog KulwantNagi.com on 11th September 2011 and soon BloggingCage.com on 15th January 2012.

This is how I became a blogger and this is my short story. 🙂

2.  You have worked on several digital marketing projects. What are your favorite 3 digital marketing case studies?

I have tried and tested a lot of things to become a successful affiliate marketer. Here are 3 of my favorite success stories.

  1. The very first happened in 2014 when I got a message that “Congrats! You earned $200 commission”. For me, that was a game-changer because I could see the potential of online marketing and I became a professional affiliate marketer.
  2. The second incidence happened when we did email marketing in 2017 on Black Friday and made $9000 in just 4 days.
  3. 3rd magical moment happened when I launched my own affiliate marketing training in the market and it was a big hit.

3. The attention span of people is reducing and people like to watch micro-videos more. With the rise of platforms like Tiktok, one minute or even 15-second videos are widely enjoyed by people these days. How do you see the future of blogging in this age of viral videos?

I agree that more and more people are enjoying video content these days.

Here is one Google Trends graph. It clearly shows that the demand of “Content Writing” is growing year after year. Content writing is blogging only.

So I don’t think blogging would decline because this is a great way to educate the customer and we still prefer to read the content when we want to take any valuable suggestion.

4. Kulwant, many people try blogging and are not able to get results from it. What would be your advice to the people who want to start a blog or are at the initial stage of their blogging journey?

They don’t get results because they try too many things.

One day they want to become a YouTuber, second day they thought about becoming a niche blogger, and third day they are trying to learn Facebook ads.

Information overload is killing this generation now.

We have so much information available online that getting distracted is very natural.

They are distracted by so many things and unable to focus on ONE thing.

My formula of success is – Do one thing for the next 6 months without expecting the results. You’ll master it and see the results.

But here is the disclaimer: You’ll have to be so passionate for that ONE thing that you go at any level to learn the things.

5. You are a great Affiliate Marketer. How can one begin with Affiliate Marketing? Do you have any free course for it?

I have a free affiliate marketing course which anyone can start and learn the basics of affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is all about picking one niche. You can pick any good niche about which you can do the research easily and write 20-30 articles with your knowledge.

Once you do it in a right way, you can become an affiliate marketer.

6. Kulwant, we hear a lot about AI, ML these days. What according to you is the impact of these modern technologies on digital marketing?

AI and ML can never match HI i.e Human Intelligence.

They can make things easier but they cannot be as good as we human are. For sure AI is creating a big impact in the digital world and we see Google is doing a lot of algorithm changes to make their search engine a better place. They are integrating both AI and ML.

But I think we are still far away to get afraid of these things to eat the market or make any big changes. These things will take more 30-50 years to evolve. Till the time the next generation will come and they will think about it.

I always take the chill pill when someone talks about AI and ML. 🙂

7. I have taken a few questions from the readers too. Amit Yadav who is a student and aspiring digital marketer has asked “How to identify a niche in blogging? Many people say that do it in a niche which you are passionate about but he is not satisfied with that answer.”

I would reply the same.

Either it can be a topic you are most passionate about or it can be a topic which you can cover easily.

Let’s take the example of my own life.

Back in 2014, I was looking for a good software which could help me to do the keyword research easier for me. So I started searching in the forums, I read so many blogs and watched so many videos, In this process, I learnt so many things about keyword research, difficultly, DA, PA, domain age and so many things.

Now one day I found a software which was called LongTailPro, so I created a blog around it and shared many things about keyword research. That one blog made me $13,000. 🙂

I was not passionate about those things but I did the research, found one product, wrote about it and made the money.

Now let’s take another example.

Back in 2016-17, I started having a lot of hair fall and I started doing the online research. I learn so many things about strength, dryness, follicles and many other things. Soon I found a product that was good enough to promote. I started promoting that product and made $7800 by promoting it.

This is my way of finding the niche and I hope Amit’s bulb might be ON now. 🙂

8. It is really inspiring to see a question from an IT recruitment consultant. Parshuram Prabhu asks “What are the changing trends in blogging?”

A very recently changed blogging trend is – long articles.

Back in 2012-13, 800-1000 words articles used to rank pretty well, but in 2020, the minimum word count to rank an article at the top is 2000 words.

These days people prefer to read real case studies and examples. Gone are the days when people used to love articles having the title “Top 10 plugins to boost your blog” now is the time when people prefer the content having the title “How I boosted my blog 217% with 10 plugins.”

So blogging is becoming more personal and long articles are doing the magic.

Long-form content is one of the digital marketing trends for 2020

9. Finally, the last reader question is from a management student. Ujjwal Laad asks “How much can a beginner expect in full-time blogging profession? Any tips for those people who are interested in making money from the blog?”

This question doesn’t have any exact answer.

How much you earn depends on how much time are you giving, how organized you are, what is your team size, what are the tasks you are doing and so many other factors.

The Internet is an ocean and I cannot tell you how much.

I know people who are making 2-3 lakhs a month with blogging. I know people who are making the same amount of money by creating event blogs and there are many other examples.

My tips for newbies would be, focus on learning first.

Once you learn things, the money will come automatically.

10. On a lighter note, I would like to know what does Kulwant Nagi do in his free time?

Either listening to Punjabi songs or reading a book…And very recently, playing with my newborn baby girl.

11. What as per you are the top 3 free tools for SEO?

Here are my favorite SEO tools.

#1. Ahrefs
#2. SEMRush
#3. Keyword Surfer Chrome Extension

12. Mobile phones are used widely and people use them to increase productivity too. Name any 3 favorite mobile apps which you use daily and have helped you in your business.

Top 3 productivity apps are.

#1. EverNote
#2. SimpleNote
#3. Flock App

13. Kulwant, as you know Expert Speaks is an initiative to bridge the gap between industry leaders/experts like you and the digital marketing aspirants. Your advice on how can I take this initiative ahead? Any suggestions.

I would suggest doing more research on people you want to interview and ask no more than 10 questions to get a quick reply.

14. Sure Kulwant. I will work on your suggestion. Would you like to nominate 3 experts from the sales/marketing/digital marketing industry for Expert Speaks?

#1. Anil Agarwal from BloggersPassion.com
#2. Jitendra Vaswani from BloggersIdeas.com
#3. Ankit Singla from MasterBlogging.com

15. Finally, what would be your message to aspiring digital marketers?

Do ONE thing for the next 6 months and no one in the world can stop you to become successful.
